Pets improve a lot in our lives. Unfortunately, the one thing they don’t improve is indoor air quality. Thankfully there are a few steps you can take to help your home’s air quality and keep your HVAC in good shape. If you’re a pet owner, here are our tips to help you out!
Change the HVAC Filters
One of the most essential things you can do to improve your indoor air quality is to ensure your HVAC filters are changed regularly. The air filters are designed to remove air particulates that float around inside your home. These particulates include dust, allergens, pet hair, and pet dander. When you have a furry friend that sheds a lot, the pet hair can cause the filters to get dirty and clogged more easily. If the filters get clogged, the particulates can be released back into your home and worsen your air quality. A clogged filter could also cause your HVAC system to stop working entirely.
To avoid all of this, change your air filters regularly. As a pet owner, this usually means every two months.
Keep Home Vacuumed
If you have pets in your home, you may be familiar with the sight of hair and fur on, well, everything. It’s an inevitable part of living with a furry friend, but it’s also important you vacuum that pet hair up as often as you can. The fur can get into filters and then the air ducts of your HVAC system. This isn’t great because it causes your system to become more stressed and compromise indoor air quality.
We recommend keeping floors, carpets, and couches (if you can) vacuumed as much as possible. This way, you’ll keep your HVAC system clean from fur and dander and help increase its lifespan and your air quality.
Invest in Pet Grooming
Grooming helps to make your pet look cuter, smell better, and improve your indoor air quality! Regularly grooming your pet means less dead skin dander and shedding fur around your home. The less shedding to be had, the fewer particles that clog your HVAC filters and air ducts. For pups, bathe and brush them regularly. For cats, no bathing is necessary, but regular brushing will help keep their hair shedding in check.
Keep Air Ducts Clean
Air ducts are an important part of the HVAC system. When they’re clean, then healthy air circulates throughout the entire home. And when they’re clogged with pet hair and dander, the contaminated air circulates and makes air quality worse. It can also make your HVAC work harder and result in it shutting down after some time. To avoid all of this, get an HVAC technician to perform regular ductwork inspections.
